My
transmission has been acting badly, so I resolved to swap to a
manual transmission. This was done on a 1995 Sl1, but it should
be similar for all second gen cars.
Step 1
Grab an eight
millimeter socket and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Step 2
Remove the dash
cover.

Step 3
I chose to remove the
rear view mirror. Mostly due to the fact I kept whacking my head on it.
There should be a
Torx screw holding the mirror in place. Mine was missing this screw.
You should now be
able to see the pivot point for the pedal. This took the longest and
probably would have taken five minutes with an air ratchet.
The best way I found
to do this was to place the ratchet on the right from underneath the
dashboard and from the top, push the one on the right away from you as
you pull the one on the left towards you. After a hour or so
the bolt will come free.
The pedal is still
connected to the rod for the master cylinder though.
And you will have to
contend with one of these clips. The best way to remove these is to grab
the top portion with a pair of Vise Grips and yank.
Remove the white foam
after the clip comes out, pull the pedal off the pin and slide it out. Lube up the new pin
on your manual transmission brake pedal with your favorite spooge. I
like napa cable and chain.
Slide the new unit
back up there and slip the bolt in. Finger tighten the nut and move on
to the clutch pedal.

underneath the dashboard. The pcm is already removed.

OFF THE BOLTS FOR THE PCM MOUNT
Doing this added
another unnecessary 45 minutes to the project. It uses little clips that
the screws thread into and I had to fish one out with a magnet. Slip the
clutch pedal up there and slide it through. You can get it up there
attached to the rod and I suggest you do it that way.
Tighten everything and use loctite. I don't want anyones pedals coming
off.
After tightening,
clip the brake rod onto the pedal. Remember the white anti rattle foam
thingy.
Snap the dash back
into place.
Reinsert PCM and
harnesses.
Reconnect Battery
Before moving faster
than a brisk walk, SLAM on your brakes to make sure the pedal is secure.
