Remove manual transmission shift knob

(without hurting yourself!)

There are 2 ways to remove the shift knob - cut it and remove the clip (pictured below), or pull really hard.  The pulling method is easy enough, and doesn't damage the knob, so it is preferred, but many people have hurt themselves when the knob comes loose.  The steps below will prevent some pain in the pull method.

 

The yellow indicates the location of the clip holding the knob in.  It is possible to cut the rubber on the side of the knob facing the HVAC controls and remove the clip, but the steps below are recommended instead.

 

Removal

 

Step 1: Sit in the driver's seat

 

Step 2: Put the shifter in 2nd gear

 

 

Step 3: Put your right hand around the front of the knob, as pictured.  This somewhat awkward positioning will give you control of the knob as it comes off, keeping you from hitting yourself in the head, or breaking your dome light (as many have done before).

 

 

Step 4: Put your left hand over your right one, and pull hard.
